In a remarkable show of solidarity and compassion, the Cycle Around the Globe 2024 virtual event, organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), was a success once again.
Marking World Suicide Prevention Day, this yearβs month-long campaign united 4,143 participants from over 40 countries in joining together to change the narrative around suicide. Teams and individuals from across the world collectively walked, ran and cycled a staggering 517,845 kilometers – equivalent to circling the Earth more than 12.5 times. The eventβs primary goal was to raise awareness of suicide prevention. By pedalling for this cause, participants sent a powerful message that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who may be struggling.β―Β
Over 60 teams rose to the challenge this year, including several returning supporters and enthusiastic new groups. Topping the leaderboard this year was the returning team, Vilnius Public Health Bureau, whose βRide for Lifeβ event drew 1,612 participants and covered an impressive 204,677 kilometers!
Familiar teams such as GoPro Employees for a Cause, Pirae Cyclisme, UP InΕ‘titut Andrej MaruΕ‘iΔ and Kilometri za ΕΎivljenje, Telefono de la Esperanza, and the CCC Foundation played a pivotal role in sustaining the momentum of this global campaign.
Cycle Against Suicide joined the campaign this year, making a significant impact with two major events: a virtual βCycle of Hopeβ and the βMizen to Malinβ Challenge, where 75 cyclists each covered 732 kilometers. Together, they contributed 56,930.63 kilometers and generously donated β¬500 to the campaign.
Additionally, the Positive Spin Project and Zayed University, led by Senior Mental Health Social Worker and IASP National Representative for UAE, Sarah Williams, joined the effort this year. This UAE-based initiative cycled an inspiring 2,541 kilometers, promoting positivity, wellness, and community connection through their mental health-focused journey.
Numerous inspiring stories unfolded as participants shared their personal experiences and ties to the cause. One poignant contribution came from Laura Pellegrino, who returned to honour her fatherβs memory with her team, βRemembering Richard Pellegrino.β Their incredible effort raised $1,778.
While participation in Cycle Around the Globe is free to ensure inclusivity, over $6,000 was raised for global suicide prevention efforts. Thank you to those who have donated to the campaign, every donation helps us work towards our vision of a compassionate world, free of suicide.
IASP is grateful to everyone who has taken part in Cycle Around the Globe 2024 for their unwavering support. The eventβs success sends a message of hope, showing that people from all walks of life can come together to change the narrative around suicide. As the sun sets on the eleventh annual Cycle Around the Globe, itβs evident that the commitment to suicide prevention awareness continues to grow around the world. A heartfelt thank you goes out to every participant, team, and supporter who made this achievement possible. Together, weβve taken significant strides toward spreading awareness, fostering hope, and saving lives.
