Charity S. Akotia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana, Legon. Her speciality is social/community psychology and her main research interest is mental health, specifically suicide and suicide prevention in a cross-cultural context. Other research interests include gender issues at the workplace. She has worked extensively on research projects with colleagues in Norway, Uganda, the USA and Canada and has published widely in several local and international journals.

Her work on suicidal behaviour is phenomenal and has brought has contributed to the understanding of this behaviour in Ghana and in other African context. Her work covers the experiences of suicide attempters, reasons and motivations for suicide, attitudes toward suicidal persons in the Ghanaian culture and the influence of religion on suicidal behaviour. She is currently part of a group that is advocating for the decriminalization of the law against suicide in Ghana.

Over the years, she has served on several local and international Boards and Committees and has held administrative positions at the University of Ghana, including Head of Department of Psychology and Dean of the School of Social Sciences, a position she held for six years until July 31, 2020.

She has also presented papers at conferences worldwide, including keynote addresses. Prof Akotia is currently the National Representative for the International Association for Suicide Prevention in Ghana.
