Dr Vikas Arya is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing at the University of Melbourne. His research primarily focuses on the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour and on media reporting of suicide. He led the initial analysis of data on suicidal thoughts and behaviours from the 2020-22 Australian National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing. He was also involved in evaluating the New South Wales Suicide Monitoring System. Beyond Australia, Dr. Arya has made significant contributions to international suicide prevention. His research on suicide in India played a crucial role in shaping the country’s first National Suicide Prevention Strategy. Additionally, he led a Google and IASP initiative to develop a search engine coping module for users with suicidal ideation, creating pre-written crisis texts in Hindi and English—supporting millions of internet users in India.
