Guided Tour in the Kunsthistorisches Museum – Saturday 14 June at 11:00AM.
Dr Steven Stack and his wife, Barbara Bowman will provide a guided tour of the suicide art in the Kunsthistorisches Museum on Saturday 14 June 2025 at 11AM local time. The tour will meet in the lobby and attendees will be responsible for purchasing their museum tickets. The tour will take approximately one hour. The Kunsthistorisches Museum has been described as one of the most important museums worldwide, and its collection includes suicide art such as depictions of the suicides of Lucretia and Cleopatra. At the end of the tour, attendees should be able to discuss the backstory and meanings of the art, identify underlying themes, and relate these themes to a wider array of artistic portrayals of suicide. Please contact Dr Stack directly by email to indicate your interest. The tour is limited to the first seven people to respond. Dr Stack is co-editor, with David Lester, of Suicide & the Creative Arts (2009) N.Y.: Nova Science.
This museum tour will include depictions of suicide that include methods of suicide. We understand that this content may be distressing for some delegates. We also acknowledge that sharing details of suicide method and location when discussing suicide should be avoided. Safe language aims to reduce the risk of harm whilst increasing awareness and understanding of suicide and its complexities.

Colonel Redl and the Werther Effect: Talk and Guided Tour through Vienna’s Old Town – Wednesday 11 June at 18:30 (Breakout room to be advised).
Alfred Redl, a colonel in the Imperial and Royal General Staff and Deputy Director of Military Intelligence for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was a prominent figure in pre-World War I espionage. Known as the “spy of the century,” he died by suicide in Vienna on May 25, 1913. His death was a major news story, involving scandal, espionage, sex, sexual orientation (homosexuality), luxury, greed, betrayal, and a dramatic rise and fall. These elements are reminiscent of the plotlines of many contemporary blockbuster movies. The talk (20 minutes), held by Associate Professor Florian Arendt, will present empirical evidence supporting the idea that the sensational news coverage of Redl’s suicide led to an increase in suicides in the general population, known as the “Werther effect.” The talk will be followed by a guided tour through Vienna’s Old Town (60 minutes), including locations related to Colonel Redl’s suicide. We will use the public transport system to reach Vienna’s Old Town. Once there, interesting sites are within walking distance, and we will engage in low-intensity walking at a comfortable pace.

Naschmarkt Walking Food Tour – Various dates at 9:30AM
Attendees are invited to join Peter’s Naschmarkt Walking Tour—a guided exploration of Vienna’s largest and oldest market, known for its vibrant oriental flair. The tour will be offered on Tuesday 10 June, Wednesday 11 June, and Thursday 12 June 2025, each starting at 9:30 AM. Participants will meet in front of the Kettenbrückengasse metro station (Line U4), using the “Naschmarkt” exit. Please note that parking is not available in the area. The tour lasts approximately 2–3 hours and costs €35.00 per person. Payment must be made in advance via PayPal or in cash on the spot, as debit and credit cards are not accepted. The experience includes a guided walk in English and various tastings—such as spices, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and sausages—along with a keepsake tasting kit (handmade cloth bag, porcelain spoon, wooden fork, napkin). Personal expenses such as drinks, purchases, and tips are not included. The tour will proceed in all weather conditions. For further enquires, email naschmarkt@theagency.at
