Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training for Crisis Intervention Officers

In 2023, Malaysia made a groundbreaking advancement in mental health care by decriminalising suicide attempts and enhancing the Mental Health Act. This reform introduces Crisis Intervention Officers (CIOs) to provide critical support for individuals in suicidal crises. These frontline officers include police, firefighters, civil defence personnel, social workers, and maritime officers.
To further develop the skills and effectiveness of these essential caregivers, #ZeroSuicideSarawak, in collaboration with the Social Development Council Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development of Sarawak, Hospital Miri, and the Mental Health Association of Sarawak Miri Branch, is launching a comprehensive training initiative in the Northern Zone of Sarawak. The training will take place over two days: October 1st, 2024, and October 8th, 2024, to accommodate maximum participation.
This program is designed to equip CIOs and other frontline officers with critical skills, including recognising warning signs of suicidal behaviour, practising empathic listening, conducting risk assessments, and engaging in collaborative care.
By strengthening our network dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health crisis intervention, we aim to build a more informed and supportive community.
